نوروز نخستین روز سال خورشیدی ایرانی برابر با یکم فروردین ماه، جشن آغاز سال نوی ایرانی و یکی از کهنترین جشنهای به جا مانده از دوران ایران باستان است.

عید نوروز

خاستگاه نوروز در ایران باستان است و هنوز هم مردم مناطق گوناگون فلات ایران، نوروز را جشن میگیرند. زمان برگزاری نوروز، در آغاز فصل بهار است که امروزه به آن برابری بهاری یا اکیونوس میگویند.

نوروز در ایران و افغانستان آغاز سال نو محسوب میشود و در برخی دیگر از کشورها یعنی تاجیکستان، روسیه، قرقیزستان، قزاقستان، سوریه، کردستان، گرجستان، جمهوری آذربایجان، آلبانی، چین، ترکیه، ترکمنستان، هند، پاکستان و ازبکستان تعطیل رسمی است[نیازمند منبع] و مردمان آن جشن عید را برپا میکنند.

زمان نوروز

جشن نوروز با تحویل سال یا لحظهٔ برابری اعتدال بهاری آغاز میشود؛ لحظهای که خورشید در سیر ظاهری خود در ابتدای برج حمل، از استوای زمین گذشته و به شمال آسمان میل میکند.

در گاهشماری هجری خورشیدی، لحظه تحویل سال، تعیین کننده نخستین روز (هرمز روز یا اورمزد روز) از ماه فروردین است. چنانچه آغاز سال، قبل از ظهر و در نیمه اول شبانه روز تحویل شود، همانروز نوروز است و در صورتیکه تحویل سال بعد از ظهر باشد، فردای آن روز، نوروز است. نوروز در تقویم میلادی در بیشتر سالها با ۲۱ و گاه ۲۰ و بندرت ۲۲ مارس مطابقت دارد.

در کشورهایی مانند ایران و افغانستان که گاهشماری هجری خورشیدی به کار برده میشود، نوروز، روز آغاز سال نو است. اما در کشورهای آسیای میانه و قفقاز، تقویم میلادی متداول است و نوروز به عنوان آغاز فصل بهار جشن گرفته میشود و روز آغاز سال محسوب نمیشود.

What is Nowruz

Nowruz (Persian: نوروز) is the name of the Iranian New Year in Iranian calendars and the corresponding traditional celebrations. Norooz is also widely referred to as the "Persian New Year".

Nowruz is celebrated and observed by Iranian people and the related cultural continent and has spread in many other parts of the world, including parts of Central Asia, Caucasus, South Asia, Northweste China, the Crimea and some groups in the Balkans.

Originally being a Zoroastrian festival, and the holiest of them all, Norooz is believed to have been invented by Zoroaster himself, although there is no clear date of origin. Since the Achaemenid era the official year has begun with the New Day when the Sun leaves the zodiac of Pisces and enters the zodiacal sign of Aries, signifying the Spring Equinox.

The term Norooz in writing, first appeared in Persian records in the 2nd century AD, but it was also an important day during the time of the Achaemenids c. 548–330 BC), where kings from different nations under the Persian empire used to bring gifts to the Emperor, also called King of Kings (Shahanshah), of Persia on Norooz.

The significance of Norooz in the Achaemenid empire was such that the great Persian king Cambyses II's appointment as the king of Babylon was legitimized only after his participation in the New Year festival.

The UN's General Assembly in 2010 recognized the Inteational Day of Norooz, describing it a spring festival of Persian origin which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. During the meeting of The Inter-govemental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage of the United Nations, held between 28 September – 2 October 2009 in Abu Dhabi, Nowrūz was officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Nowruz spelling variations

Nowruz, Norooz or Norouz? ? A variety of spelling variations for the word Nowruz exist in English-language usage. Random Houseprovides the spelling Nowruz.

Merriam-Webster (2006) recognizes only the spelling "Nauruz" (and a contestant in the final session of the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States, Allion Salvador, was disqualified on that basis).
